BYU Sports Management
My career in the sports industry began in 2018 at BYU. I started as an intern and was promoted to a BYU Marketing & Game Day Production Assistant. I have worked with every BYU collegiate team, writing game-day scripts, cueing the video boards, managing sound, running interactive promotions, working with sponsors, and more.
BYU FOOTBALL
From the pregame experience called Cougar Canyon to on-field promotions, I have done it all. The 2020 and 2021 football seasons were particularly challenging, as I had to be creative in how I engaged only 1,500 fans in fall 2020 while maintaining COVID-19 protocols, and in how I engaged 63,000 fans at the 2021 sold-out games.
Additional work I have done with the BYU Football team is:
Executing Cougar Canyon, a pregame event for people of all ages to interact as fans, engage with sponsors, purchase gear, play games, and more.
During the 2019 season, I oversaw the loges, which are suites for special guests.
Conducted the 2021 9/11 memorial pregame experience at our season home opener.
Led a team of interns during key moments of the game to execute game day rituals and fan engagement activities (e.g., third-quarter break, Cosmo, Y-Calp)
BYU EVENTS
When I was not on the court/field wearing a headset, I planned and coordinated BYU athletic events. These events include traveling fan fests, Midnight Madness, Signing Day, Y Awards, trunk-or-treat, 9/11 Tower Climb, and much more. These experiences helped me hone my skills in leadership, budgeting, thinking outside the box, and so much more!
BYU MEN’S BASKETBALL
I was the lead on overseeing the production of the 2021-2022 BYU Men’s basketball season! I was responsible for leading and queuing many aspects of the in-game fan experience. These responsibilities include video board, sound, on-court promotions, cheer, Cougarettes, Cosmo, and more. Additionally, I executed sponsorship activities, ensuring that companies pursuing deals worth up to $ 100K were pleased with their representation and engagement with fans. Holding this position was an amazing opportunity to grow, learn, and better understand how to oversee many different aspects and people within an arena to increase fan attendance and execute important promotions that require leadership and teamwork.
BYU MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
BYU sports is known for its consistently amazing volleyball teams. One of my favorite teams in BYU athletics to work with is the Men’s Volleyball Team! I was the team lead from 2019 to 2021 (three-season). Over the years, I came to understand the team and its fan base better and was able to tweak the game-day experience to give everyone a better experience- players and fans! I was on the headset for every game for three years, cueing music, video board, on-court promotions, and coordinating with corporate sponsors. The Smith Field House venue is an experience that no other collegiate arena can replicate. During my 3 years working with BYU Men’s Volleyball, I helped increase attendance (almost every game sold out) and improve the student experience. In 2020, I conducted a Lumberjack Night against Stanford, giving us our fourth-highest-attended game ever.
BYU ADDITIONAL SPORTS
I have been blessed to work with every sports team at BYU. This has opened my mind to the different game-day atmospheres and how to tailor the experience to each specific sport. The following are teams that I have worked with:
Women’s basketball: Led production and advertising plan for Women’s Basketball National Girls and Women in Sports Day and Breast Cancer Awareness Day, impacting over 400 fans. I introduced and executed the kids’ table on the concourse. Our goal with the kids’ table was to attract more families to the games, and it was a major success!
Swim and Dive: My favorite event I have ever overseen was a Swim and Dive meet. Our Swim and Dive team does not get as much love as the other sports. I approached my bosses with a plan to work with the team and create a fun experience. With a $500 budget and hard work, I helped create a memorable experience at the Swim and Dive senior night against Utah. An average meet attendance is 50. At this meet, we had 400 attendees! We ran a large-scale marketing campaign to raise awareness, and at the meet, there were giveaways and food. Additionally, Cosmo participated in a big way! But the best part was the participation of 3 athletes from every sports team on campus in swimming a relay race.
Soccer: Assisted in fan engagement for BYU Women’s Soccer, leading to #1 average attendance in the nation for collegiate NCA Soccer
Softball, Baseball, Women’s Volleyball, Gymnastics, Cheer, Track and Field, Tennis, Golf
